Travelling by road can be a good option for tourists who wish to explore the areas around Lugano, the highway that traverses through Lugano connects northern Europe to the Mediterranean, if you are coming from Milan then you can either take highway A9, direction Como to Saint Gotthard, or the A8, direction Varese to Stabio (Gaggiolo) to reach Lugano.
In order to be allowed to drive on Swiss highways you have to purchase a road tax stamp available at the Customs house and stick it to your windscreen, the cost of the stamp is CHF 40 and it is valid from January to December, other means of transportation include train, hire cars and taxis, tourists prefer hired cars or taxis as the road trip offers a wonderful experience through the picturesque landscape surrounding Lake Lugano. |
